Meet Noah

Noah’s Mum’s Perspective

Tell us about your helmet journey?

Noah started his helmet journey when he was around 5 months old as he had been referred to physiotherapy due to the neck muscles on his left side being too tight. He was unable to turn his head to the right and this had caused his head shape to change a lot. Noah was assessed and diagnosed with very severe plagiocephaly. After researching and looking into different types of helmets we decided to get booked in and take the next step of getting Noah fitted with a helmet. We preferred the look and lightweight of serkel helmets. The overall look of them was much better and it is much more breathable as well which was a must for Sydney weather!

What has your experience been of having a child wearing a helmet?

The whole process ran very smoothly for us. Before meeting with Access Orthotics I was nervous about the helmet and thought what if it’s hurting him but our Orthotist Charlotte put our minds at ease and showed us how light the helmets were and explained everything. Once Noah was fitted and wearing his helmet every day there was no looking back! People would ask questions about it in public and he would just sit there smiling away. Having regular follow-ups to see the progress was great and you could really see the difference it was making.

What advice would you give to parents who are thinking about helmet therapy for their child?

My advice would be to 100% get an assessment done and go for it! Everyone has different opinions and some say this can be corrected itself but we tried everything with Noah and he wouldn’t have any of it until the helmet. Noah’s head shape was really bad and I would think to myself if that was me and there had been a fix for that absolutely would I have wanted that done. I have no concerns about Noah now and if he needs glasses one day it should be an easy process!

Noah’s Orthotist’s Perspective

Noah initially came to see us for an assessment at 5 months old. At this appointment, we took scans of Noah’s head utilising a 3D scanner and produced a report which was provided to Noah’s parents and his physiotherapist.

This scan showed Noah to be in the Very Severe category for CVAI (plagiocephaly) with mild CR (brachycephaly).

Noah’s parents decided to proceed with helmet therapy.

At our last review with Noah at 9 months old, before he moved away, his head shape had improved significantly to Mild CVAI (plagiocephaly) and Normal CR (brachycephaly).

Noah continued to use his helmet until he was around 1 year old and Noah is thrilled with the results as you can see from his recent image below!
